Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced an upgrade to Ethereum aimed at bringing blockchain verification mainstream. The proposed upgrade, dubbed “The Verge,” could change the way people interact with the Ethereum network by enabling blockchain verification on small devices like smartwatches.
The development, announced on October 23, targets one of the biggest obstacles to widespread adoption of blockchain: the massive data storage required to run a full Ethereum node. Validators currently require hundreds of GB of storage, with an additional 30 GB added each year, making it impractical for most users to participate in network verification.
“The Verge is all about changing this and making full chain validation computationally very affordable, and all mobile wallets, browser wallets, and even smartwatches run it by default.” Buterin He expressed his desire for a more inclusive blockchain world.
The Verge upgrade describes the very different structure by which blockchain processes and stores data. Essentially, the proposal introduces “stateless client validation,” an innovative approach that avoids the need to maintain a complete copy of the blockchain on every device.
Instead, the system deploys advanced cryptographic technologies such as SNARKs (Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge) necessary to enable efficient verification with minimal data storage.
The current proposal includes a wide range of innovations, including STARKed binary hash trees, which provide improved security and scalability compared to traditional systems.
