A new HBO documentary scheduled to air next week claims to have uncovered the true identity of Bitcoin’s mysterious founder, Satoshi Nakamoto, according to Politico.
The film, titled “Money Electric: Bitcoin Mystery,” is directed by Karen Hoback, the Emmy-nominated filmmaker known for “Q: Into the Storm.” The documentary will premiere on HBO on Tuesday, October 8th at 9pm ET and will be available to stream on Max.
If the documentary succeeds in proving Nakamoto’s identity, it could raise serious legal and ethical questions. Nakamoto is believed to control around 1.1 million Bitcoins, worth an estimated $66 billion at current market prices.
With Bitcoin now firmly entrenched in the global financial system, the disclosure of Nakamoto’s identity could have far-reaching implications and influence the US presidential election.
Former President Donald Trump is gaining support from Bitcoin supporters. The timing of the documentary’s release is likely to increase speculation about how Bitcoin’s future intersects with politics and regulatory action.
Adding to the intrigue, several early Bitcoin wallets for the token have become active in recent weeks, with around 250 Bitcoins (worth about $15 million) being moved. While the wallet is not conclusively linked to Nakamoto, the timing of the documentary’s release raises doubts about its reactivation.
Over the years, various people have claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, most famously Australian cryptographer Craig Stephen Wright, but he has been unable to provide conclusive evidence of his identity.
The Bitcoin community is divided on whether Nakamoto’s identity should be revealed. Many argue that his anonymity is crucial to the ethos of Bitcoin, and that without cryptographic evidence from known Satoshi wallets, any attempt to uncover his true identity is speculative. I am doing it.
