Off The Gird is the latest little-known player to have garnered a huge audience since its launch thanks to some smart Twitch campaigns featuring big streamers and the fact that it’s a lot of fun to play. It’s like a game. However, what many of these streamers don’t tell you is that this is actually a crypto-based game that plans to add NFTs in the future. But that may not be a bad thing.
Off The Grid is a brand new battle royale shooter in Early Access that incorporates Extraction Shooter mechanics, effectively making it a bit of a cross between Apex Legends and Escape From Tarkov. For a game that almost no one cared about until it went into early access this week, it’s a surprisingly good game with fun shooting mechanics and great movement.
It’s far from perfect, with some weird design choices like very thin maps and no real visual feedback when you’re shot, but these can be fixed fairly easily, and maybe Off The A battle royale that could make Grid the next big thing.
Thanks to a partnership with streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, who has his own skin in the game, and advertising deals with a number of other celebrities, Off The Grid has become one of the most streamed games on Twitch in recent days. and hundreds of thousands of streams. It also ranks in the top 12 most played games on the Epic Games Store, ahead of the likes of PUBG, League of Legends, and Rainbow Six Siege.
However, one thing that seems to have been kept silent is that Off The Grid is a blockchain-based game, with plans to add NFTs and implement a crypto-based marketplace in the future. That’s what it means.
So far, crypto functionality has been lacking, and given its somewhat unexpected success, it has been postponed significantly in the future so as not to alienate an audience that generally has a not-so-good view of crypto in games. I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case.
However, the way the development team has talked about this implementation in the past doesn’t seem to be terrible. In fact, it seems exactly like how the Steam Marketplace works for Counter-Strike and similar games, only that transactions occur on the blockchain. Considering that Steam balances can be cashed out through third-party sites and CS skins, it’s basically exactly the same blockchain implementation proposed by Off The Gird, and uses a shady trading site to do so.
