Ronin Network has decided to integrate Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to improve the security of its Ethereum bridge.
The move comes in the wake of a history of security breaches on the platform, including a major hack in 2022 that resulted in significant financial losses.
Chainlink’s protocol was selected through a voting process, with security being a top concern for developers in the Ronin ecosystem.

Rebuilding after a past breach
The Ronin Network, developed by Sky Mavis, has repeatedly faced security issues over the past few years. In March 2022, the platform suffered one of the largest hacks in the decentralized finance space, resulting in the loss of $622 million in assets. The attack was later identified as being the work of the Lazarus Group, a hacking organization linked to North Korea.
In August 2024, ethical hackers took $12 million from the network to prove weaknesses and exposed further vulnerabilities, but the funds were quickly returned. Additionally, $9.5 million worth of Ethereum was stolen from the wallet of a Sky Mavis executive earlier this year.
These incidents have led networks to seek more secure cross-chain infrastructure.

Why Chainlink’s CCIP?
After evaluating proposals from Chainlink, LayerZero, and Axelar, Ronin validators selected Chainlink’s CCIP as the new security protocol for the Ethereum bridge. Chainlink received 10 votes in the selection process, while LayerZero received 3 votes and Axelar received none.
This decision was primarily based on Chainlink’s multi-layered security approach, which includes a decentralized oracle network and risk management capabilities.
“Security was the most important factor when deciding which cross-chain protocol would secure the future of the Ronin ecosystem,” said Phuc Thai, Principal Researcher at Sky Mavis.
Chainlink’s CCIP integration begins with a bridge transfer between Ethereum and the Ronin network. The full migration is expected to take two to three months, but all existing tokens on Ronin will be automatically upgraded to utilize CCIP for secure cross-chain transfers, allowing users to You don’t need to do anything.
