Paolo Ardoino, CEO of stablecoin issuer Tether, has denied rumors that his company is under investigation by federal agencies.
In a post on social media platform I mentioned the press.
According to a report from the WSJ, the Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office is investigating whether Tether’s USDT is being used by bad actors to finance illegal activities or launder the proceeds of criminal activity.
The report also claims that the Treasury Department is considering the possibility of sanctioning Tether due to the “extensive use” of USDT among companies that are subject to U.S. sanctions.
In response, Ardoino said the Journal was simply reusing a long-standing story.
“As we told WSJ, there is no indication that Tether is under investigation. WSJ is regurgitating old noise. Full stop.”
Ardoino also emphasized that Tether routinely cooperates with U.S. authorities to prevent Tether from using USDT to fund illegal activities.
“At Tether, we regularly work directly with law enforcement authorities to prevent the misuse of USDT by rogue states, terrorists, and criminals.
We can tell if we are being investigated, as the article falsely claims. Based on that, we can confirm that the claims in the article are demonstrably false. ”
